Long time, no write. And some Fail cast insight

So first of all - this little place got somehow pushed aside, but mainly due to the fact, that after I finished repainting my Inquisitor / Witch Hunter I got back to military modelling, which ended up in me having a whole shelf of models to make.
My work pace however didn’t change that much, so there was a silence in my mini painting. They are still in my box, waiting to be made though and one of them is currently being made ;)

Thus said, main course - my insight into Citadel Finecast (yay, I managed to spell this correctly, though Fail-cast is closer to reality ;) ).

The Gray Champion (revisited)

2nd Purgation Squad “Aurelius”

“Smoke slowly dispersed itself over the battlefield, while grey dust settled on the ground. Silence fell heavy in a small vale which only a while ago, saw things that no man shall witness and no words describe. Three tall figures were standing still in the midst, with dead foes lying all over them.

The Grey Madness

All right, so the hype is on, the advance order of Grey Knights is available :D

I’ve been waiting for them for quite some time, so I was kinda excited to see what GW cooked this time.
And, as I’m more of a modeller - I’m not taking ANY rules changes into consideration nor tabletop usefulness. I look at them as models. And bits. And as such they’ll be judged.

As I was totally carried out by the new Dark Eldars, some of Fantasy Battle news - I was expecting something groundbreaking.

It didn’t happen.

Basic Basing

I recently checked my preview folder, with some quite low quality pictures I sometimes take along making my minis, and it was quite the crowd there.

So, why not putting together some work-in-progress post for that. Generally speaking I’m not great at writing or making WiP’s, because I tend to forget doing photos regularly while working. I do prefer to just work :D

And by the way - I finished the XV battlesuit some days ago, but still it needs a good fluff, so a day or so, should be enough to put him ;)

Okay, ‘ere we go with bases!

At first - I’m making now my three Grey Knights (one of which is stripped from paint and currently undergoing a complex repainting ;) ), so I wanted fitting bases for them. And I mean no grass bases, no simple rock or lava bases. I wanted something nice, with a death / chaos feeling.

So here’s the attempt.

After some thinking, I came out with the basic concept, that I need a rocky ground with slabs & such, maybe some ruins (but it’s damn hard to fit something elaborate on a 25 mm base, keeping in mind, that I need to fit the mini itself. And GW usually makes their minis bulky and barely leaving much space there).

The design was made and plaster was put to use:

I usually use plaster as I find it the easiest way to repair and use. It’s also very good for further sculpting after drying. It can be fragile though and many times I was left with plastic separated from the plaster creation :D But - you only need some PVA glue or Super Glue to cover this up.
So that’s the Design #1 (later on: D1), I intended for the Incinerator Knight, as it’s the bulkiest of them all. A simple slab with some arcane runes I found all over the net. No particular meaning, just scribbling.
And a note here - I usually first make some smooth plaster outline on the base, as I see the main shape to be. After drying I start to dab, scratch and thrust the base randomly (more or less), to create a rocky look. It may not seem great at the beginning, but after consecutive paint layers it really give a great, rocky look. And it’s quite time effective.

D2 - some ruins, with a pillar like shapes. Debris here and there. Well, those pillars are slightly out-of-scale but they fit. The wired one supposes to be a reinforced concrete fence part (destroyed), hence the skull.
But you might interpret it as you wish :D
Debris was made by  crushing some plaster and then randomly putting it on the base. Bonded via dilluted (50:50) PVA glue. Takes next to forever to dry, but the effect is good.
I also added some runes to the debris.

D3 - Another rather flat base. This time two slabs and two skulls. I think I went a little overexcited about them, but heck - they look good! It’s not visible here, but the slab to the right has a chaostar inscribed as a fine detail. Also the front skull is pierced through. Just some minor improvements, to add details :)

As long as I have the smallest clue as to what I want to have on the base, construction is going smoothly and quickly.

Next up is the painting. As for the rocks and skulls - there’s not much of a philosophy. I first mixed Black with Cold Grey (roughly 50:50) and thin it a bit (plaster sucks water like hell, which gives a nice effect). Two layers.
Then a plain Cold Grey drybrushed heavily, followed by a good amount of black wash done twice, another Cold Grey drybrush and finally a light drybrush of White Grey to make a finishing effect :)

For the skulls - Dead White with Smoke wash - rinse and repeat until the effect is satisfying. I only added black in the eyes and deeper crevices, plus drybrushed with my own mix of Bleached Bone (white + sepia wash).

There’s also that rusted pole - I used the 3 step rust technique from CMoN, but refined it with additional steps, like a drybrush of Rust colour.

So there, finished bases, matt coated and awaiting Daemonhunters!

I do understand, that the pictures are not top notch, but they were made quickly and just to show some preview :D I only recently thought I might come up with a post here :)
One the Knights are finished, you’ll get also proper view of the bases :D

Citadel Paint Station + Pot + Mat review

I know it might be quite unusual to write a review here - especially non kit review, but I’ve got a feeling, that there’s a lack of more in depth information about certain Citadel products, so in fact it sometimes may lead to a blind buying. I’m a little tired of all the promotional stuff rewritten on many pages, which simply - exposes only good sides of the product, while it naturally (all in all, that’s what promotional text is for) omits eventual drawbacks, lacks etc.

So, I bought myself a nice set of a Citadel Paint Station complete with cutting mat and a water pot. Having fiddled with them a bit, here’s quite detailed description of what’s this stuff all about. Read on and have fun!

Further tweaks

So I recently saw that there’s some major issue around comments here on Tumblr.
Reading a little more I do see, that there’s no other way to enable comments other than sign up for Disqus acount. So I implement the Disqus option from now on.

I enabled the comment feature to anyone - so if you don’t have an account there - no problem! You might now express your thoughts about the minis put here, and I do encourage to do this - of course as long as it can be judged a fair and constructive criticism :)

So from now on - all comments are enabled via the “X Comments” line under the post!
